if i could be Gauguin today

if i could be Gauguin today
i'd get right up and fly away.
i'd tear the bonds of daily life,
leave the children and the wife.
i'd take myself away to sea,
just what there is inside of me.

i'd lay down 'neath Tahitian skies
and see the world through Gauguin's eyes.
the skin so red and orange and brown
with long black hair cascading down.
i'd lose myself in soft brown flesh,
in warm dark eyes my soul refresh.

but freshened souls are not my lot.
just work and play are all i've got.
but it could be another way
if i could be Gauguin today.
